the boys who brunch

Filed under: mike speaks — mike @ 3:22 pm

So, I’ve actually had an idea for a television show for quite some time now.

And I’ve finally written the entire pilot episode, a treatment, and a couple subsequent episodes.

My friend, James Papadopoulos, a fairly successful, freelance editor, director, producer, has agreed to help me shoot the pilot!

Most recent developments include James locating a company willing to loan us camera and lighting equipment in exchange for a “cut of future profits,” as well as someone who may be able to shop around our finished product!!

I’ve almost cast the entire episode using extremely talented actor friends, and I spent the day with James yesterday going over the script in detail, and discussing things like insurance, expenses, and a shooting schedule.

I’m very excited that what was once a mere idea in my brain, is now a script, a cast, and a possible future!!

STAY TUNED! :-)

Yogi Berra!

Filed under: mike speaks — mike @ 2:22 pm

For the sports fanatics out there:

I probably lived a lot of guys’ dream yesterday. I had to write a post about this.
I understand the opportunity was wasted on someone a little undeserving/appreciative, and for that I really am truly sorry. Haha.

As someone who doesn’t really care about sports or know anything about sports, I wasn’t even aware of how fortunate I was until it was all over.

Chuckleball was asked to perform at the annual Yogi Berra Museum Golf Outing. It was held at this beautiful country club in Mont Claire, NJ, at $2,500/plate, for the Yogi Berra Museum.

I was singing, literally, 2 feet away from a table that had Rudy Guiliani, Yogi Berra, Don Mattingly & Co. seated around it.

There was a picture taken with the cast and Yogi that I will post shortly.

I have since been schooled on the legend that is Yogi berra, and in retrospect am very honored to have been apart of the event. Also, another exciting part of the evening was getting a plate of the Steak that everyone else paid $2500 for.

Regardless of my lack of knowledge or interest in baseball, I did know it was a special day when I saw Rudy Guliani smiling at me as I sang to him. After all, I do live in the city he turned around! :-)

In The Waiting Room…

Filed under: mike speaks — mike @ 2:00 pm

So, the Freedom Train tour came to it’s end on May 2, 2008. I’ve since been back in NYC, currently living in Washington Heights. It sure is far, but beautiful. It’s by far the largest apartment I’ve lived in NY. You definitely get more for your buck up here.
I’ve been on quite a few auditions (about 10), with about a 60% callback rate (about 6). The callbacks make me feel like I’m not completely senile in thinking I can do this thing, but at the same time, they don’t pay the bills. :-( I would LOVE a job right now!!! I’m financially and artistically starved!

The closest and most amazing things I’ve come to tasting thus far is the role of Simba for Disney’s Hong Kong show/Cruise Line and most recently, a callback from Tara Rubin Casting for “Pepper” in the Broadway production of Mamma Mia! The ship would be a great way to save money and see the Bahamas and well, I don’t have to explain why Broadway would be the ultimate!!!

I’m extremely terrified about my callback for Mamma Mia! because the dance cut is first at 10a. I am a “singer who moves well!” NOT a dancer! Hahaha. This is the reason I DID NOT go to the dance call. However, I suppose this is necessary. I mean, from what I know, Mamma Mia! does have some dancing in it. :-) They sent me the sides and I’m as ready as I can be. Justin Senense, a great friend I’ve made from the show Chuckleball, has been called back by them in the past and is 10X the “dancer” I am, and has agreed to show me the combination. Let’s pray this helps me!!!

So, that’s the update. Just here, in the waiting room, hoping for my number to be called soon. I’ll take all the prayers you have time to make.

Love,
~me

Freedom Train

Filed under: mike speaks — mike @ 7:06 pm

So, tour began the morning of January 14th (my brother’s birthday–happy birthday, Matt!)

Here we are 5 days later, and the cast already knows way too much about eachother, and we’ve already done way too many shows it seems.  We are all exhausted.  We joke that it feels as though we’ve been on tour for MONTHS already!
Luckily, we have 4 days of relaxation.  I’m currently back in NYC for 2 days, and we head out Monday morning to Alabama.  Monday and Tuesday are both travel days and we won’t have a show again until Wednesday.

But, with all that said, and all the complaining and exhaustion, it does feel REALLY good to do theater that means something.  It’s one thing to get paid to do what I love, but to actually have the opportunity to tell an important story such as this one, adds a whole other level to it.  The show is very physical and when my legs and back hurt, I just remember how the slaves didn’t have icy-hot to use afterwards, or knee pads, or gel soles in their shoes to absorb the shock of jumping.

I’m really blessed and I’m very grateful for this opportunity.  I love the cast (if any of you are reading this–SERIOUSLY, we lucked out! That van would feel a lot smaller with any other people!), I love the show, I love the story we’re telling, and I love that I’m living my dream!

TTYS! :-)

The cast of Chuckleball–Katey Daniel, Noah DeBiase, Justin Senense, and myself, will be singing the national anthem of this here United States of America, for approximately 60,000 people at the Jets game on November 18th!!

“Sort of exciting” would be an understatement, huh?

An Actor Gets His Card!/I Am David!

Filed under: mike speaks — mike @ 3:32 am

Like the title? It’s a play on 2 movies. Well, the first is a play on a famous line from a movie, while the second is a play on an actual movie–well, not so much a “play” as in the actual title. Haha. Ok–rambling.

I believe it’s in It’s A Wonderful Life when the character says, “when a bell rings, an angel gets his wings…” and there’s a movie with one of my all time favorite actors (Jim Caviezel) called “I Am David.” There, everything is clarified. So, why these titles for the title of this journal entry?

My callback with Theatreworks went wonderfully well!!! After my audition, before I left the room, she asked me what my spring schedule looked like. I told her I was in a show that will be ending at the end of December. She then said, “well, basically I’m saying to keep it open–I’m offering you a job!” My reply was “sweet!” I was so in shock that I’m not sure what my body or face did. I know I said sweet! That’s about all I remember. I was trying to keep my composure and some level of professionalism, but on the inside I was doing jumping jacks and cartwheels. It’s just a tour, but it’s what it signifies. The first tour I went on signified a change in focus, my career, me giving up my “day job” and giving acting 110%, and this time, this tour signifies a change in direction of my career. This tour will give me my equity card! Dun Dun Dun!!! The infamous equity card. I was trying so hard to keep composed and to deal with my shock, that I’m afraid I may have come across as arrogant, and would give anything to rewind to fix what I happened next. HAHAHA. She said, “..and you’ll get your equity card!” And I said, “Oh, I know!” Who says that??? What I meant was, what non-union actor in NYC doesn’t know about theatreworks and the fact that they can give you this card that we work so hard to attain? What I meant to say was, of course I know who you are and what you offer and I’m so eternally grateful for the opportunity. But, no. Instead, what came out was “Oh, I know!” I’m not sure how it was received. But, I said one more “Thanks so much” and walked out.

My aunt and mother were on the line when I called and started screaming. It’s really funny because they just know they’re supposed to be excited. They know it’s a good thing and that it’s their cue to cheer. But, really have no idea what this equity thing even means really. I loved when my mother was trying to explain it to my aunt and how she decided to do so. She said, “It means, he’s now in the same union as Fantasia!” Cute, huh? Great ladies. :-)

Oh, and the “I Am David” part, besides being obsessed with Jim Caviezel, is the part I got. The tour is FREEDOM TRAIN and it is the story of Harriet Tubman and the underground railroad, etc. I believe David is her brother (from what I got from the audition sides). I’ll also be playing the part of William Still later in the show. The tour leaves early January and ends in May. I’m really excited. And if for any random reason, that lady is reading this–I AM VERY GRATEFUL!! Scratch the “Oh, I know!” I wasn’t satisfied with the delivery of that line :-)

Now, I’m just waiting for the email from Theatreworks as promised, with all the details and more info about the tour. I’m on pins and needles waiting for this email! I need some sort of concrete evidence that this really happened, and that I didn’t dream it up. Boy, that would suck. Because I told a lot of people already while awake!

me

Passed on Dreamgirls!

Filed under: mike speaks — mike @ 1:48 am

So, I had to make the difficult decision to pass on the role of C. C. White., Effie’s brother.

I had auditioned for NH’s Palace Theatre season (Chicago, Miss Saigon, & Dreamgirls) at an open call a couple months ago.

Who knew a couple months later they’d call to offer me such a great part!!! I would be in New Hampshire right now if it weren’t for Chuckleball. I had already gotten the call from Chuckleball about 2 weeks prior and accepted that show instead.

Although Dreamgirls would’ve been a dream, it would only run for a couple weekends, and in New Hampshire. Chuckleball, however, is a 10-week minimum contract, at a well known Off-Broadway space in NYC! It wasn’t that difficult of a decision :-)

Dreamgirls now joins Ragtime, as AMAZING shows offered but couldn’t accept! Hopefully, someday I’ll be able to do these shows, and maybe even on a much larger scale.

Here’s dreamin’!

Theatreworks/USA calls again!

Filed under: mike speaks — mike @ 1:43 am

So, Theatreworks/USA had personally called me before to set up an audition for the role of Sheldon in their Junie B. Jones tour, which I obviously didn’t get, because it was a while ago. “Ah, well” is what I said. I chalked it up to just another of the many “nos” we here in this industry.

Since that audition, I was offered a role in Chuckleball, which is a musical sports parody revue, sort of like Forbidden Broadway. We had our first show today in previews week. We officially open on November 2nd at the Snapple Theater Center on 50th & Broadway. It’s very exciting. Anyway, so everything happens for a reason, right?

Well, today after our matinee, I check my voicemail to hear Theatreworks again!! Deja Vu? Anyway, this time they want me to come in for the part of David in their spring tour of a show called Freedom Train. I did a bit of googling and learned its a show about Harriet Tubman, the underground railroad, and the people she helped–a bit heavy for a tour?–but grateful for the opportunity nonetheless.

Let’s hope that “everything happens for a reason” thing keeps panning out for me. If I were to get this tour, not only would it give me my equity card, but it’s in the Spring, which means it wouldn’t conflict with Chuckleball at all, and I could finish my contract!

Anyway, first thing’s first. I need to find 16 bars of a gospel song.

Love,

me

TELSEY CALLED ME for Matt in The Fantasticks!

Filed under: mike speaks — mike @ 10:29 pm

I was on my way to Chuckleball rehearsal the other day when I noticed I got a voicemail from a call I missed while on the train.

I check it and it’s a lady from Telsey Casting asking me to come in the following day at 5:20pm for an audition for Matt in The Fantasticks! For those of you that don’t realize. Telsey is one of the LARGEST casting companies in NYC!! Almost any show you can think of on Broadway and Off-Broadway and even some films, have been cast by them!!!

I’ve only been to their studio once for an open call, of which hundreds of people showed up-so many, in fact, that they typed, and then told the remaining we only had 8 BARS to sing!!

Well, I must’ve done something right in my 8 bars, because months later, here I am getting a call to come in for my own audition at Telsey for a main role in the “longest running show” off-broadway! It would mean the almighty, infamous equity card, real salary!, etc. It would change my life.

She emailed me 3 songs from the show and 2 sides; quite a bit to absorb in one evening!

I had the musical director from Chuckleball play a bit of the music for me after our rehearsal the next day, and then I was off to Telsey!

Well, folks. I’m not sure how it went. I was in the room for a while! haha. That’s all I can say. The lady was so sweet and nice that it left me not knowing how to read the audition. I feel I did the best that I could considering. She even gave me some direction and I feel I took it well? We’ll see! Oh, and did I mention… A black Matt??? Would I be the first black Matt in the history of the longest running show in NY history? This show started in the 60’s folks!!

Anyway, I’m just glad I got the call and that it went well! Like, I said, Telsey is HUGE. So, even if I’m not Matt… Let’s hope it’s not the last call I get from them :-)

Love,

TV Network Calls & The Tour Pushes On…

Filed under: mike speaks — mike @ 3:51 am

So, I had a final call back with Disney on March 6th, the day before I left for tour, and an audition with a tv network based in Albany, looking for a host for their series set to be shot in Virginia!

Well, while on tour, I’ve since heard from both of them!!!  Disney called and wanted to meet me for April 3rd.  I reluctantly had to leave a message letting them know that my current contract with Oz doesn’t end until May 22nd.  Luckily, not only does Disney send out tours often, but they keep call-backs on file for up to a year.  I’m sure if it’s meant to be, that I will get a call from them again, and hope they’ll appreciate the fact that I’m remaining loyal to my current contract.

I also got a call from the TV Network and got the hosting job!  I get back from the Wizard of Oz tour on May 22nd, and fly out to Virginia on June 3rd to begin filming!

We spent the day yesterday in Boston, as we performed at Berklee today.  Our largest venue to date was The New Neward Symphony Hall.  We performed for 1400 people!!! It was surreal!!!  I still can’t believe I’m doing this for a ilving right now.  I’m having a great time.

Well, ’till later… :-)
